Giants vs Diamond Backs

San Francisco Giants (0) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (2) – July 12, 2014

Seven shut-out innings of pitching from the Diamondback’s Wade Miley (6-6) sealed the Giant’s fate this day. It was also the fourth consecutive loss for Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong (5-7) and the fifth time in thirteen games that the Giants failed to score any runs.

This was not the expected outcome. The Giants held a 7-4 season lead over the Diamondbacks coming into the game. The nearly opposite season records of the Diamondbacks (40-55) as compared to the Giants (51-43) gave one hope that the game was going to go San Francisco’s way. So much for statistics.

Despite a recuperating back, Marco Scutaro made his season debut at second base. The home town crowd cheered his return and eagerly anticipated the contributions he might make to a team which has recently seemed to be lacking a spark. The result: He took a walk and went hitless in his two other appearances at the plate.

If the game itself was a disappointment, then the pre-game honoring of former Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky on the 25th anniversary of his comeback was reason enough to attend. Dravecky (1987-1989), who battled and survived cancer in his pitching arm, is now a motivational speaker. His website, http://www.davedravecky.com, can be accessed for additional information.
